How to Choose a One-of-a-Kind Gemstone Ring
Choosing a ring is rarely just about size, colour or budget.
Sometimes it’s about the feeling you have when you see it. The stone that catches your eye. The shape that reminds you of something. Or simply that moment when you put it on and it somehow feels like it belongs to you.
That’s especially true when you’re choosing a one-of-a-kind gemstone ring. Because when a piece is handmade, the small differences are part of what makes it yours.
So, where do you begin?
Start with the stone that draws you in
There’s no right gemstone to choose.
Perhaps you’re naturally drawn to deep greens and blues, or maybe warmer tones catch your eye. You might love the depth of a dark stone, the softness of pink, or the warmth and brightness of yellow or a mixture of colours.
And sometimes, the reason you choose a stone has nothing to do with colour at all.
It might be your birthstone. A colour that reminds you of somewhere you love. A stone that simply feels like you.
That’s what I love about gemstones at MitsyMay. They give you a chance to make a piece personal, without taking away from the character of the design itself.
If you’re choosing a ring as something to keep and wear for years, start by asking yourself:
Which stone would I still love to look at years from now?
One stone or three?
The number of gemstones can completely change the feeling of a ring.
Our Tangled Roots 1 Stone in Gold and Tangled Roots 1 Stone in Silver keep the focus on one individual gemstone, held within an organic, twisted band inspired by the shapes of roots.
There is something lovely about a single stone. One small point of colour and light, surrounded by a piece that has been shaped by hand.
If you’re looking for something with a little more presence, our Twisted Roots 3 Stones in Gold brings three stones together within the twisted, organic form of the design.
The additional stones create a fuller, more layered feel while still keeping that connection to the natural shapes that inspire MitsyMay.
Neither is more special than the other. It simply comes down to what feels right when you wear it.
What does “one of a kind” really mean?
At MitsyMay, I don’t want two pieces to be identical.
Every piece begins with wax, which I hand-carve, warm, manipulate and shape before it is cast into metal. There is no mould, no computer model and no fixed template telling the piece exactly how it should look.
And when a gemstone is involved, the stone becomes part of that process too.
Natural gemstones have their own character — subtle differences in colour, inclusions, shape and cut. Rather than trying to hide those differences, I see them as part of the story.
That means your ring may vary slightly from the photograph you first fell in love with.
And that’s the point.
Our Georgina Collection is a beautiful example of this. Its organic, textured form takes inspiration from the natural marks and textures found around us, and each piece has its own small differences.
It makes the finished ring feel less like something taken from a production line and more like something that has found its way to you.
Silver or gold?
The metal you choose can change the whole character of a piece.
Silver has a cooler, understated quality, while gold brings warmth and a slightly richer feel. But rather than following a rule about which metal you should wear, look at what you naturally reach for.
What jewellery do you already wear every day?
Which pieces do you find yourself putting on without thinking?
Sometimes the best choice is simply the one that feels most like home.
Think about the life your ring will have
A ring doesn’t have to be saved for a special occasion.
In fact, some of the most meaningful pieces are the ones that become part of ordinary life — worn with your favourite jumper, on a walk through the woods, to dinner, or simply because you wanted to put it on that morning.
A more delicate design might slip easily into your everyday jewellery collection, while a larger gemstone or more sculptural shape might become the piece you reach for when you want to feel a little more noticed.
Think about how you want your ring to live with you.
Because jewellery changes as we do.
It gathers little marks from everyday life. It becomes familiar. It becomes part of your story.
And perhaps, years from now, you’ll look down at that ring and remember exactly why you chose it in the first place.
The most important thing?
Don’t choose a ring because you think you should.
Choose the one you keep coming back to.
The colour that makes you stop scrolling. The shape your fingers naturally notice. The piece that reminds you of someone, somewhere or something you want to hold close.
Because a one-of-a-kind ring isn’t really about owning something that nobody else has.
It’s about finding something that feels unmistakably you.
